Kolpak Refrigeration and Product Load

Kolpak Refrigeration is designed with your needs in mind. The size of the refrigeration unit is determined by factors such as the overall compartment size, number of doors, door type, ambient conditions, refrigeration line runs, and usage. Usage, storage of products, and food prep will play a critical role in sizing the refrigeration correctly. Typical walk-in opportunities often provide little guidance on usage and therefore walk-ins may be designed for “Holding Only” product only.

What does “Holding Only” mean?

“Holding Only” refers to the condition where the product entering the walk-in is already at or close to the temperature of the compartment, meaning it doesn’t need to be cooled further. Hot, warm, or room-temperature products will add a heat load to the walk-in and, when that is not accounted for, will create refrigeration challenges. Placing refrigerated product in a freezer may not seem like a temperature challenge, but refrigerated product placed in a freezer is typically a minimum of 40˚ warmer than the freezer compartment set point, which adds a significant heat load to your walk-in freezer.

Be sure you keep this information handy:

If your application differs from the normal conditions already mentioned, it’s crucial to have a load estimate specifically for your walk-in. This estimate, based on your product load or application details, ensures that the refrigeration system provided is designed to meet your needs and expectations.

Product Load and Application Details Needed

The product load information includes the product type, current temperature of the product, number of pounds of product, how often the load is placed in the walk-in, desired temperature, and time frame to achieve your desired product temperature. Some Kolpak walk-ins or warehouses include other factors that must be considered, such as when individuals are working in the compartment, the “people factor” that could affect temperature, and the “heat load” from equipment.

Kolpak remote refrigeration systems come with a condensing unit and an evaporator assembly. They are supplied with refrigerant for a 50-foot line run, ensuring optimal and efficient operation. When reviewing line runs, be sure to take into consideration vertical line runs and any angles placed in the refrigerant piping.

If you are still deciding on your application or have any questions, we encourage you to get in touch with Kolpak or your local SEFA dealer. They are always available to provide the support and guidance you need to make an informed decision.
