Judging a Menu by its Cover

By Lee Davis, CFSP

The old saying is “never judge a book by its cover,” but the very reason that has become an “old saying” is because people do it all the time. People also judge a menu by its cover. The holidays are coming and one of the easiest ways to make a great first impression on your guests is to replace those outdated, faded, worn, stained, damaged and dog-eared menu covers with new ones. While you’re at it, why not select some of the most stylish and exciting designs and materials available.

I recently spoke to Jaclyn Smith, Director of Operations at Menu Solutions, Inc. She talked about some of their newest products, all of which are made in the U.S.A. Alumatique is a Menu Solutions exclusive, and is one of my favorites. It’s available in single panel menu boards, or as a riveted double panel menu cover. Contemporary and simplistic at the same time, Alumatique is ultra-durable, water resistant, and easy to care for. The boards come with a choice of menu clip, picture corners, or top and bottom strips. The menu covers can include a one color silk-screened logo and a brushed or large swirl finish.

Menu Solutions’ Hardboard Series is a great way to show your customers that you care about the environment. They are made from recycled materials. The single panel menus have a universal modern appeal that fits with any décor, including Asian, contemporary, steak house, industrial, and traditional. The double panel riveted menu covers, with an engraved logo on the front, have a more rustic yet contemporary feel.

Jaclyn told me that 14 million people dine out at Thanksgiving. Christmas and New Year’s Eve follow soon after. Table tents are a great way to boost sales by advertising holiday specials or festive drinks. They are also perfect for promoting holiday events, parties, or dinner packages. Menu Solutions has a vast selection of table tents in a wide variety of materials and designs. Check out their entire catalog of great “menu solutions” here.
